Does your school have a policy regarding sabbatical leaves? Do you see the value in them? Are you one of the lucky teachers who has taken one?

I am in a district that allows sabbatical leave. I have not taken one but in theory, I do see the value in them. A sabbatical is primarily geared toward academic work, research, or other purposes that will increase the individual's competence or further professional growth and will contribute to the improvement of the school. The idea is that such events, activities, or experiences will enhance the ability of the teacher to make himself or herself more productive in the classroom. So I am all for it.

I do have a slight issue with them. In looking at my colleagues who have been granted permission to take a sabbatical, the decision does not always appear to be objective. There often appears to be some bias in whose application gets approved and whose gets denied. The indivudals who are most in need of additional professional development and alternative learning milieus don't always get their application for sabbatical approved. Manytimes, those individuals who are the most visible, most liked, and consistently get articles and/or books published tend to be favored when it comes to sabbatical.

My system allows sabbaticals for up to one year. Teachers have taken them for academic, health, and personal reasons. I have never heard of anyone not being granted their request.

The sabbatical only insures your employment in the system upon return. You are not guaranteed to be placed back in your original position or school. Thus, when you take the sabbatical, you run the risk of being moved to a different grade or school or both.

I have been fortunate to have received several sabbaticals over the years. They are a wonderful program at my school which FEW teachers take advanatage of using....thus, I had more than two. My school district requires at least 2(3credit) grad. hours. I took independent study so that I could focus on areas I felt were of interest to my social studies program. One year, I developed DBQs, another geography activities and how to increase multi-curricular aspects with my team in the area of social studies...all things which during the course of the school year, I had little "free" time to develop.

****** I must add that all my sabbaticals were SUMMER sabbaticals NOT time from the teaching school year. Our school's determination is to give TWO per summer and that the deadline is February of the school year. The board reviews the proposal for its merit. SCHOOL Sabbaticals require returning for two years or you must repay the amount received back to the school district.

You can't take a sabbatical but you can take a leave of absence. This means you can't come back unless there is opening for you. But once you are back you continue your level of seniority.

The primary purpose of a sabbatical is to engage in academic work, research, or other purposes that will increase the individual's competence in a subject area or give further professional growth and will ultimately, contribute to the improvement of the school. The idea behind a sabbatical is that such experiences will enhance the competence of the teacher to make himself or herself more productive in the classroom.
