How Young is Too Young for Computers?? Sun, 10 April 2005 18:55 Go to next message
A recent Education World article:

http://www.educationworld.com/a_tech/tech/tech215.shtml

Gave tips for teaching preschoolers and toddlers how to safely play and learn with computers. As the article mentions, experts suggest no more than 2 hours of screen time (tv plus computer plus video games combined!!) a day for this age. Others even suggest that kids under 3 should NOT be on computers at all.

Speaking as a mother with a toddler who does have 10 minute blocks of time on the computer and as a computer teacher who works with 3 year olds in their classroom, I do think computers can play a limited role at this age, but what do you think? When (and how) do you introduce computers to toddlers and preschoolers? What are the advantages and dangers of starting young with technology?

I don't think that there is any age that is too young. Rather than focus on age, I think it has more to do with the individual child's level of development. Children make it known when they are thirsting for knowledge and we need to quench that thirst.

But the caution is that we not overpower them with it. I hate to see children who are immersed into learning environments to such a extent that their childhood is passed by. While I think learning computer technology is important, I would not wish to see its use sacrifice the emotonal and social development of a child which is enhanced by basic forms of entertainment such as interacting with other kids, playing with blocks or playing in the mud. Computer training should be incorporated piece-meal into the child's life.

I teach computers to pre-school/K in groups of 3. There is an amazing selection of software available to teach pre-reading/math skills. I especially enjoy teaching Kid Pix 3, and they enjoy using the wacky pencil, drawing freestyle or with geometric shapes and adding digital images. Although they don't know how to type or read, they can stamp their letters and create drawings. For Father's Day, they had a template of a banana and drew their own facial expressions/body parts. This was titled "My Dad is the Top Banana". A slide show is always made at the end of a project showcasing all their work with sound. I also teach digital photography using a program called Photo Kit Jr.

I am on a technology committee in my son's elementary school where I volunteer and teach PowerPoint and Word to K-3rd Grade. My 1st/2nd grade classes enjoy using word to learn the alphabet. They type the alphabet in upper/lower letters. They also learn how to type their name, change the color, font and style. They also experiment with Word Art to make 3 different styles of their name. This one simple lesson teaches them how to open a new doc/save/exit and open files. They learn about the enter/shift/backspace/delete/spacebar keys. It also teaches how to change the style of text and experiment with the use of WordArt. In Sept. I will work with both the board of education and our technology teacher to integrate curriculm directly related to classroom topics.

My son,3 years young, spend more than 10 min a day in front of computer.
In fact, nearly 1 hour a day.
He is really love to play computer games such as "The incredible mashine", "Vinnie Pooch and his friends" and ... "Diablo 2" Smile Sure, if "The incredible mashine" draw him by it's colorfull pictures, and he did not play on it in regular way, just play with removing pictures, in "Vinnie Pooch and his friends" he fully understand all the rules and traineng himself very, very good! Smile
Regarding "Diablo 2" it's sounds terrible but he didn't understend real sense of this game and call it "ba-bah !":)

Queston is: Does any body know any real bad experience of computer gaming on the described way?
May be anyone can advise any courseware for 3 year age?

Thank you in advise
Aly
